Preservation as a living practice.
Scott Ford Houses, Inc. is a nonprofit dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and activating this significant African American historic site. Its work joins preservation, public history, education, community engagement, and health equity.
The planned museum complex encompasses the two houses, wash house, chicken coop, and gardens. In 2022, the Mississippi Legislature appropriated $200,000 toward restoration of 136 East Cohea Street following work by the Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus.
The organization continues Dr. Alferdteen Brown Harrison’s vision by centering Black women’s knowledge, honoring everyday labor, and refusing erasure.

- Preservation planning and stabilization of the Scott Ford Houses
- The Granny Midwives Oral History Project, documenting statewide memories of midwifery
- Public programs, story circles, and intergenerational gatherings
- Museum exhibitions, including a permanent installation at the Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center
- Digital archiving and educational partnerships
- Long-term planning for a Midwives’ Heritage Campus
